THE WEEK OF GLOBAL INTERRELIGIOUS DIALOGUE – SEPTEMBER 15-21 2009
CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
2009 marks the Seventh Annual Week of Global Interreligious Dialogue. During the week of September 15-21, individuals and organizations around the world are encouraged to share the common religious and cultural values and traditions in celebration of the United Nations International Day of Peace: “… a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities.”The environmental deterioration of our planet contributes to the unrest we are seeing in the world, directly impacting the opportunities for peace. How can we balance the needs of humanity with sustaining our planet, and work to resolve the conflict between a global economy and environmental conservation? How can the religious and spiritual communities contribute their considerable resources to these crucial issues?
Our gathering of communities will build a critical mass of positive energy and unity to facilitate a greater understanding of our own interconnectedness, our interconnectedness with nature, and of our responsibility for each other and the environment. These programs need not be elaborate or formal as the purpose is to bring people together to share common traditions and to work toward a more peaceful and cooperative future. Outcomes of the dialogues will be shared on the GFLP website.
Co-Organizers: Global Family for Love and Peace, The Global Family for Love and Peace Cooperation Circle, one of the over 300 cooperation circles formed under the auspices of the United Religions Initiative and the Indigenous Culture and Education Center.
