Monica Willard, URI Representative to the United Nations, and Deborah Moldow, facilitator of URI-UN, were jointly awarded the Spirit of the United Nations Award...
in the NGO category on October 26, 2009, presented by the UN NGO Committee on Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns-NY “to those individuals whose lives and works at the United Nations best express the core principles, spirit and vision upon which the United Nations was founded. These spiritual principles and values are stated in the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

This was the first year that the committee presented the award to NGO representatives. The other distinguished 2009 recipients were H. E. Ambassador Augustine Mahiga, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Tanzania to the United Nations, and Dr. Monica Sharma, Director of Leadership and Capacity Development at the United Nations, OHRLLS. Past recipients of the Spirit of the UN award were former Under Secretary-General Anwarul K. Chowdhury (2007) and H.E. Ambassador Hilario G. Davide, Permanent Representative of the Philippines (2008). The awards were presented at a ceremony to launch the 2009 UN Week of Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns.
Deborah and Monica have served together at the United Nations for almost 15 years. They are well known throughout the UN system for their campaign to expand observance of the annual UN International Day of Peace on September 21st both at UN headquarters and around the world, as well as their work with the Values Caucus, the Committee of Religious NGOs, and the Interfaith Partnership for the Environment, as well as their inspiration from the prayer, “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” They were warmly introduced by Ms. Yvonne Acosta, Chief of Education Outreach for the UN Department of Public Information.
According to Deborah, “This is a wonderful recognition of the collective efforts of the NGO community around the world, serving with passion and dedication for the United Nations and a united humanity.” Monica says, “This award really recognizes a blessed collaboration in our efforts to build a culture of peace.”
