The Circle for Peace and Nonviolence Education

Purpose: To be an on-line, globally-based group of URI members committed to sharing, learning, and teaching the ways of Nonviolence Communication and Training in Nonviolence and Peace at core levels.  Those who can teach others will share stories and pictures with the group, will offer trainings from various traditions and in various models in appropriate settings for CC’s and others, and will populate the Resource section of the website with suggestions for readings and opportunities.  We encourage regional websites to carry specific links to the URI website so that all may access these resources.

Current Membership: 18

Traditions:
Jain, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, Religious Science, and Christian (Episcopalian, Lutheran, Quaker, Catholic)

Description of Activities: We are just beginning, building on a foundation of effective use of different techniques in training at the Children’s Peace Palace in Rajasthan, the sharing with Youth Ambassadors in their formation, and several in-circle trainings within CC’s – notably, Hendersonville, North Carolina’s Peace Academy. We have developed a lively on-line dialogue among prospective members with multiple gifts who see a need for sharing such information both within and without URI.

What can an individual do to promote non-violence?? Dr. S.L. Gandhi says:

--I have one suggestion as to how one can minimize violence in one’s life. As we are householders it is not possible for us to be nonviolent completely. What is necessary is a feeling of awareness that violence is bad and it degrades our life. In order to strengthen this awareness I would want every member of this URI Multiregion circle to pledge himself to observe it and secure the following commitments from individuals including students, youths and adults.

  1. I will not kill or injure or inflict pain on any person who has not done any harm to me.
  2. I will adopt a nonviolent method to protest against any injustice done to me and will refrain from resorting to violence or retaliation.
  3. I will not give a false witness against any individual.
  4. I will respect all religious traditions and will work for interfaith harmony.
  5. I will try to refrain from unnecessary violence like hunting or destroying biologically different forms of life just for fun or out of carelessness.
  6. I will not support aggression and will oppose the production of nuclear weapons.
  7. I will try to promote a culture of ahimsa wherever it is possible.

These are very small vows and if one observes these vows it would mean a beginning towards the path of ahimsa. The most important thing is that we have faith in these vows and we take them voluntarily out of a realization in the heart.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. S.L. Gandhi
