The United Religions Initiative at the United NationsPurpose: To provide an ongoing presence for the United Religions Initiative at the United Nations and to engage the URI in initiatives and agendas of the United Nations. Description of Activities: URI-UN is very proud of the widespread participation of URI CCs in the International Day of Peace on September 21st, which our CC encourages. In 2008, URI-UN co-sponsored a ground-breaking consultation between UN officials and NGOs on the International Day of Peace. URI’s Representative to the United Nations, Monica Willard collects reports sent in from the URI groups and other NGOs, including many inspiring photos, to submit to the UN. Congratulations to all of you who helped the URI show up at the UN by observing this important annual celebration of peace.
Our 2009 programs are designed to highlight the UN International Year of Reconciliation, a perfect issue for interfaith efforts. URI-UN is hosting events on reconciliation for the UN Commissions on Social Development, the Status of Women, Sustainable Development, as well as the Indigenous Forum and the UN Week of Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns. We welcome reports from your CC on work supporting reconciliation efforts in your region. The URI supports the current initiative to encourage a UN Decade of Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, Understanding and Cooperation for Peace. We continue to invite your CC to help support the UN through the eight Millennium Development Goals and the UN Environment Programme through the One Billion Tree Campaign. In 2007, URI-UN hosted a luncheon for ambassadors, UN agencies and departments, and religious NGO representatives entitled: “Interfaith Partnerships for the MDGs.” This lovely event was not only well attended but also an excellent showcase for the Appreciative Inquiry process that was instrumental in the development of the URI. URI-UN also co-sponsored a workshop at the 2007 DPI/NGO Conference at the UN on “The Ethical and Spiritual Response to Climate Change,” moderated by URI-UN facilitator, Deborah Moldow.
