The Golden Rule CC

Purpose: One fundamental principle that could play a major role in peace-building efforts and the renaissance of humanity is the Golden Rule. It is the foundation of everything including democracy, because it directs us to give the same power to others, as we would like to have for ourselves, namely, the power to make decisions in matters affecting our lives.

Description of Activities: When it is applied to politics, the Golden Rule leads to policies that create the greatest good for the greatest number, with basic rights for all. Thus, total good is maximized and no people are denied the basic needs of life. This is a good formula for happiness and social stability anywhere. The Golden Rule, which is clearly stated in different religions and sacred texts, is the password and key to a better world.

The Golden Rule CC in partnership with Interfaith Peace-building Initiative of Ethiopia (IPI), a URI CC in Ethiopia, started to present every year a Golden Rule Goodwill Ambassador to individuals or communities who made outstanding contributions in promoting the message of the Golden Rule through their actions.

The inaugural recipient of the Golden Rule Award and Goodwill Ambassador of was world-renowned athlete Haile Gebreselassie of Ethiopia.

In 2008 Golden Rule Peace Medal Award was given to the Awra Amba Community of Ethiopia, Sheikh Saleh H. Habimana of Rwanda, and David Keating of Canada and appointed them as Goodwill Ambassadors of the Golden Rule.

The Golden Rule Peace Medal was presented to the Awra Amba Community in recognition of their outstanding contribution to promoting a culture of peace, gender equity, respect for all life, and for being a living example in practicing the Golden Rule in their daily lives.

The second recipient of the award was Sheikh Saleh H. Habimana, the Mufti of Rwanda.  Sheikh Habimana was actively involved in the process of reconciliation in Rwanda following the 1994 genocide.  He received the award for his tireless work in promoting interfaith harmony and reconciliation in Rwanda.

This year's award also goes to Mr. David Keating of Canada who has been engaged in actively promoting the Golden Rule for many years.  He is the founder and facilitator of the Golden Rule Google discussion group and the Golden Rule Radical Web site. www.goldenruleradical.org The Interfaith Peace building Initiative acknowledged David's important contribution to the emerging international Golden Rule movement in the realm of networking and information sharing.

All three recipients were also appointed Goodwill Ambassadors of the Golden Rule and will promote the message of the Golden Rule nationally, regionally and internationally.

The Golden Rule CC in partnership with IPI is working to get the Golden Rule Day Proclaimed at the United Nations. With this in mind letter sent out in 2008 to all member state of the United Nations. The Golden Rule poster was also printed and sent out.

Let us use the Golden rule as a password in our work of interfaith harmony and building and a culture of peace.
